Jeremy Nolan played the young man following strangers around London in order to find inspiration for his novel. One of the people he tries to follow finds out that he was being followed. He introduces himself to the young man as ‘Cobb’, and claims to be a burglar. Thus, begins the young man’s association with the world of crime. Like many of Nolan’s later movies like Memento, Batman Begins, and The Prestige, this movie uses a non-linear mode of storytelling. While this movie is not as famous as Nolan’s later works, Following had received mostly positive critical acclaim. This film follows a man who, after an injury develops anterograde amnesia(the inability to form short-term memories). Using an intricate system of Polaroid photographs and tattoos, he attempts to track down the person who attacked him and killed his wife. Starring Guy Pierce, Carrie-Ann Moss, and Joe Pantoliano, this movie is presented through two sequences of scenes that eventually intersect. The first sequence is shown in black and white and chronologically, while the second sequence is shown in reverse order, and in color.

The movie was met with positive acclaim. Not only was it a box office success, but it was also well received by critics. It had received Oscar nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Film editing. The nonlinear film structure and themes of memory, perception, grief, and self-deception have won critical acclaim. It is based on the popular DC comics character Batman, and reboots the Batman film series.

With dark, realistic tones, the film met much critical acclaim. Set in the fictional city of Gotham, it presents a dark take on the character of Bruce Wayne, aka Batman a multimillionaire engaged in crimefighting and Ra’as Al Ghul as the movie’s memorable villain. It serves as a compelling origin story for the popular DC hero.

There are a number of themes the movie is said to explore. Some of those include fear and the struggle to rise above it as well as the search for a father figure. It has proven to be one of the most influential films of the 21st century. Nolan got the inspiration for the movie from the graphic novel The Killing Joke and the series The Long Halloween. The film received great critical as well as commercial success. The movie received eight nominations at the 81st Academy Awards, and it was awarded the Academy Award for Best Sound Editing. Heath Ledger, who tragically died from a toxic combination of prescription drugs had posthumously won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

The plot of Inception revolves around a professional thief who steals information from the subconscious of his targets. Based on the concepts of lucid dreaming and different levels of dreams (dreams within dreams), the movie offers a mind-bending story. The themes of dream and reality present in the film have made it indeed thought-provoking.

Inception had been received with success both among critics and in the box office. It was the fourth-highest grossing film of 2010. It is considered one of the best films of the 2010s. It has also won a number of accolades including eight Academy Award nominations including four wins (Best Cinematography, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Visual Effects).

 

 

 

 

The Dark Knight Rises(2012) – This is the final installment in the Dark Knight trilogy. We once again see Christian Bale as Batman, who has to save Gotham City from destruction. The other cast members are Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Anne Hathaway, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Morgan Freeman.

DC character Bane is the main villain in this movie, which had been inspired by the 1993 ‘Knightfall’ storyline, the 1986 series The Knight Returns, and the 1999 storyline No Man’s Land.

The movie won a favorable response both critically and commercially. It was highly praised, and the general consensus was that it was a good conclusion to a much-loved trilogy. It was praised for its action sequences, screenplay, direction, musical score, and emotional depth. It grossed over $1 billion worldwide, making it the second Batman film to do so, as well as the seventh-highest-grossing film of all time.

 

 

 

 

 

Interstellar(2014) – Inception was not Nolan’s only foray into the world of science-fiction. Christopher Nolan co-wrote the screenplay with his brother Jonathan and co-produced it with his wife, Emma Thomas. The executive producer, Caltech theoretical physicist Kip Thorne also acted as a scientific consultant for the film. He also wrote the tie-in film The Science of Interstellar.

The attention to detail given to the scientific aspects of the film had earned the admiration of science enthusiasts. The portrayal of a black hole, space-time dilation, wormholes, etc. have created much interest from science nerds, and Kip Thorne seems to have done a good job in making the film believable from a scientific point of view without compromising on the entertainment factor.

The film received generally positive reviews and did well at the box office. At the 87th Academy Awards, it won the award for Best Visual Effects. It was also nominated for four other awards.

 

 

 

 

Dunkirk (2017)With Dunkirk, Nolan managed to prove his excellence in yet another genre of film, i.e. war films. Dunkirk is based on the Dunkirk evacuation during World War 2, when allied soldiers had to be evacuated from the beaches and harbors of Dunkirk, in the north of France. The move starred Fionn Whitehead, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jack Lowden, Harry Styles, Aneurin Barnard, James D’Arcey, Barry Keoghan, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, and Tom Hardy.

The evacuation was portrayed through three perspectives-land, sea, and air. The movie was well-received and also praised for its historical accuracy. In fact, accuracy was acknowledged by Dunkirk veterans. Critics have labeled it as one of the best war films of all time.

The movie ended up becoming the highest-grossing World War 2 film. It had little dialogue, however, the cinematography and music successfully created suspense. The screenplay, direction, musical score, sound effects, and cinematography had won praise.

In the 90th Academy Awards, the film received eight nominations and won the awards for Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Film editing. It also won the 23rd Critic’s Choice Award for Best Editing and the 71st British Academy Film Award for Best Sound.

 

 

 

 

Tenet (2020) – Tenet is released In September 2020 (it was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic). Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, and co-produced by Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas. It is a spy film starring John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Michael Caine, and Kenneth Branagh.

It follows an operative of an organization called Tenet who had been tasked with preventing World War 3. In a twilight world of international espionage, an unnamed CIA operative, known as The Protagonist, is recruited by a mysterious organization called Tenet to participate in a global assignment that unfolds beyond real-time. The mission: prevent Andrei Sator, a renegade Russian oligarch with precognition abilities, from starting World War III. The Protagonist will soon master the art of “time inversion” as a way of countering the threat that is to come.
